Microsoft offers web browser choice to IE users
WindowsSource: BBC

Millions of European Internet Explorer (IE) users will have the option to choose an alternative browser from 1 March, Microsoft has announced. It follows a legal agreement between Microsoft and Europe's Competition Commission in December 2009.
Microsoft committed to letting Windows PC users across Europe install the web browser of their choice, rather than having Microsoft IE as a default.

Figures suggest that over half the world's internet users have IE. Testing for the update is already underway in the UK, Belgium and France.

Microsoft to patch 17-year-old computer bug

The February update for Windows will close the loophole that dates from the time of the DOS operating system.

First appearing in Windows NT 3.1, the vulnerability has been carried over into almost every version of Windows that has appeared since.

The monthly security update will also tackle a further 25 holes in Windows, five of which are rated as "critical"

Naughty law firm
NewsSource: BBC

Music industry representative the BPI has criticised the approach used by a UK law firm in chasing file-sharers.

Law firm ACS:Law has sent thousands of letters to people it claims have downloaded illegal content.

The BPI said it did not condone the approach of mass-mailing alleged internet pirates.

A law firm that represents some of those sent letters has called on the Information Commissioner to investigate the matter.
The BPI said it would not be adopting the same approach as ACS: Law if UK legislation on the issue of illegal file-sharing comes into force.
"We don't favour the approach taken by ACS:Law to tackle illegal file-sharing," said spokesman Adam Liversage.

"Our view is that legal action is best reserved for the most persistent or serious offenders - rather than widely used as a first response," he added.
Something for the summer
NewsStuck in doors and thinking of heading out for a walk well why not check out some Geo Caching huh I here you cry this is'nt a computer game. Pop on over to geochaching.com and have quick peek its free to sign-up and its also worldwide just pop in your area details on front page and check some local caching sites near by you.

The basics are, you jot down the GPS cords from the web site of the cache you want to try and find there are millions to find. Once you find it (some times they have been found and removed) there might be a log book inside to write a note and even sometimes there are swapable items like batteries and even travel bugs which you can take and place in another cache later on. Its a big kids treasure hunt (though kids love it to!!) with out the treasure but still very rewarding past time and pretty good fun and it will take you to some spots that you would nt have thought of heading out to.
MPs demand UK government to end secrecy over ACTA
NewsSource: TheRegister

MPs across the political spectrum are demanding that the UK government should release details regarding ongoing international negotiations on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

As we reported last week, UK.gov refused to give MPs access to papers on talks about copyright enforcement on the web and at national borders.

Since then, 12 MPs have signed Early Day Motion 700, which asks the government to release details of the negotiations to honourable members as soon as possible.

Last Wednesday junior minister David Lammy said he couldn’t put papers about ACTA in the House of Commons Library, because other countries wanted details of the talks kept secret.

"Disclosure of any documents without the agreement of all our ACTA negotiating partners would damage the United Kingdom's international relations,” said Lammy on 20 January.

On Sunday, Liberal Democrat shadow culture, media and sport secretary Don Foster, who tabled the EDM, wrote to Lord Mandelson demanding him to “come clean” on what the agreement could mean for UK legislation.

“Lord Mandelson must act to release the details of this agreement as soon as possible,” he said.

“Legislation on internet piracy is currently being debated in Parliament. Given that this agreement could override any decisions taken over the next few months, MPs have a right to know what is being decided.”
